There is a wide variety of stunning scenery in Dumfries and Galloway and the best way to see it is on foot. You, of course, have lots of walking on your doorstep round the Estate. For the more adventurous you can venture along the Southern Upland Way which is 212 miles of stunning countryside.
WalkFest - the Newton Stewart Walking Festival - is now firmly established as the biggest walking festival in the South of Scotland. Galloway is a wonderful location for walking and whether you enjoy the challenge of our true hill walking experiences or our lower level themed routes, there is sure to be something for everyone.
Dumfries and Galloway offers some of the best mountain biking in Europe and is a Mecca for those in the know.
The 7stanes are seven mountain biking centres spanning the south of Scotland, from the heart of the Scottish Borders to Dumfries and Galloway.
'Stane' is the Scots word for stone, and at each of the 7stanes locations, you'll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend.
Kirroughtree (pictured), one of the largest of the 7 stanes biking centres, is only 10 minutes from Kirkdale and offers nearly 70 kilometres of trails.

Being a coastal area, sailing is all around you either from the sandy beaches at Cardoness and Mossyard or inland at the Galloway Activity Centre at Loch Ken.
There is a huge choice of activities for children of all ages, whatever the weather, including mountain biking, walking, sailing, windsurfing, sandy beaches, rock pools, golf, tennis, horse riding, swimming, fishing and much more.
Cream O'Galloway, an award winning organic ice-cream and dairy farm with very popular children’s indoor and outdoor play area is only ten minutes away. It includes a café, go-karts, nature trails with pond-dipping and bike trails.
The Cocoa Bean Factory at nearby Twynholm, offers a fantastic experience for children with children's chocolate making workshops and a wonderful outdoor and indoor play area.
The Galloway Activity Centre at Loch Ken offers sailing courses for children, teenagers and adults. It also runs very popular multi-activity courses (by the day or week) from aproximately aged 6+ offering sailing, windsurfing, laser-questing, orienteering to name a few.
Dalscone and Mabie Farm Park , 40 minutes away, both offer fun days out for children.
