ABOUT KIRKDALE ESTATE

Kirkdale Estate is a stunning coastal Estate situated in Galloway, South West Scotland and has been home to the Hannay family for over 500 years.

Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty Kirkdale Estate has spectacular sea views across the magnificent Solway Firth.  The Estate sits within the part of Galloway awarded UNESCO Biosphere status, which means it is internationally recognised as a world class environment for people and nature.

Kirkdale is a private working Estate with farming, forestry, magical self catering holiday cottages by the sea, long lets, renewable hydro power and beautiful new cedar holiday lodges for sale on the shoreline.

The centrepiece of the Estate is Kirkdale House, a Robert Adam Georgian mansion, built in 1787 and said to have one of the least altered Adam exteriors in Scotland.

The Estate

The Estate has two wonderful, detached, traditional self catering holiday cottages, each in their own secluded location. Kirkdale Port, which sits magically looking out to sea and Garden Cottage, idyllically situated with its own private two acre enclosed walled garden.

From 2023 the first five, of a total eight, stunning coastal cedar lodges all with outstanding sea views became available for sale on the spectacular Galloway coastline. All five are now sited and sold. There are only three final plots available offering the opportunity to purchase a bespoke lodge. We have the option of a further new lodge for purchase – please do contact us for information or to request a brochure. Kirkdale Estate Lodges offers a rare and unique opportunity to own your own holiday lodge on this most beautiful stretch of coastline in south west Scotland.

Our Coastline

The coastline of the Estate overlooks the beautiful Wigtown Bay Nature Reserve, the largest local nature reserve in Britain, offering sea fishing and bird watching opportunities in addition to the wonderful sea views.

Attractions Nearby

Galloway Forest Park which is on the doorstep offers exceptional mountain biking at world class Kirroughtree, plus walking and stargazing opportunities. The Forest Park received Gold Tier Dark Sky Park Status from the International Dark Sky Association due to the exceptional quality of the night sky.

The Fleet Valley National Scenic Area is also on the doorstep. Situated around picturesque Gatehouse of Fleet the valley rises from the coast up to the Clints of Dromore and Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve offering spectacular walks amongst stunning scenery.

Kirkdale Estate is perfectly positioned to enjoy all the best of the region. Castle Douglas (Food Town), Kirkcudbright (Artists’ Town) and Wigtown (Book Town) with its annual literary festival are all within only 20 – 30 minutes.

The charming small Georgian town of Gatehouse of Fleet and Creetown village are within 10 minutes – offering many facilities, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Tennis, golf, fishing, horse-riding and endless beautiful walking opportunities can all be found nearby. Golf courses range from the local 9 hole (10 minutes away) to the beautiful links at Glenluce or the Championship course at Southerness. Clay shooting days and activities can be accommodated at the Forrest Estate too. Inland on Loch Ken, the Galloway Activity Centre also offers a wide range of activities.

Kirkdale Estate is superbly positioned in South West Scotland with Glasgow and Edinburgh only 2 – 2.5 hours away.

ONE OF SCOTLAND’S BEST COASTAL LOCATIONS

The well-known Scottish writer, Robert Heron, said in the 1700s of Kirkdale that it is one of the best coastal locations in Scotland: “The house of Kirkdale, among the most advantageously situate in Scotland, rises to the eye with a sort of magic effect (having) the air of the palace of an Arabian Tale”.
